More than 100 embassy officials, foreign teachers and overseas students from about 40 countries toured Beijing's Pinggu District on May 18.
Attendees visited Huadong Musical Instrument Factory, and Guajiayu Village, known as one of the Ten Most Beautiful Villages in China.
The tour was arranged to encourage participants to capture and submit entries for the "Beijing Spirit in the Eyes of Foreign Friends" photo contest, organized by the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BPAFFC) and relevant government organizations.
Pinggu District is branded as the heart of China's violin industry. Factories in the area produce 300, 000 instruments in the violin family each year, accounting almost one third of the world's total production. The Huadong Musical Instrument Factory is the largest musical instrument factory in the district.
Foreign visitors toured Huadong's violin workshop and observed the company's manufacturing processes. Making a violin requires excessive precision and attention to detail, a company representative told attendees.
"To build a violin, workers here need to complete 16 separate processes, including carving the head, sanding the volute and drilling the F-holes. All of the processes need excessive precision and patience." the guide said.
"The workers sit here all day and do a lot of repetitive work. They focus to achieve perfection."
Guajiayu Village is famous for its use of alternative energy. At a glance, one can notice the street is lined with solar-powered street lamps and small-scale wind power generators. Visitors got a chance to view the village's environmentally-friendly villas.
"Under the guidance of the scientific development principles of the CPC, we have developed a sustainable development mode." Zhang Chaoqi, the village's party branch secretary said. He said blue solar panels on rooftops fuel at least 30 percent of the village's energy needs. There are also about 260 solar-powered street lamps in the village.
Monika Takacs, wife of Peter Sarkozy, the First Counselor of the Embassy of Hungary in China, said the village's scenery was extraordinary.
"I have never been to this part in Beijing and I have never been to this kind of violin factory. This village is very nice. It's a nice achievement. It's fantastic." she said.
Aouini Mohamed Wassim, a Tunisian currently studying at Beijing Film Institute, said he will take part in the photo contest and hopes he can win.
"I have taken several satisfying photos today. The scenery here is inspiring. I think it's a perfect place to shoot film."
