A blast triggered by oil leaked from a tanker truck killed 20 people and injured 29 others early Friday morning in south China's Guangdong province, local authorities said.

The 40-tonne tanker truck, which was carrying solvent oil, was rear-ended by another truck at 4:30 a.m. on the Yanjiang Expressway in the provincial capital Guangzhou, the city government said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Oil leaked from the tank, quickly passed through drain pipes to a ditch under the expressway bridge and triggered an explosion, said the statement.

The blast set ablaze a container yard and some nearby buildings. The fire has been brought under control, it said.

As of 21:00, 20 people were confirmed dead and another 29 people were injured, it said.

Authorities have shut down the highway section and are conducting safety checks on the bridge.
