Mainland police have arrested a Taiwanese man suspected of murdering a businessman also from Taiwan, and the businessman's mainland driver.
Police in Fujian province launched an investigation on July 19 after a Taiwanese man surnamed Zhuang and his driver were reported missing and Zhuang's employee received a text message demanding ransoms for their safe return.
The two had lost contact since July 16 when they left Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian as well as the city where Zhuang ran a carving business, to the city of Xiamen, police were told.
A Taiwanese man surnamed Li, who was a trading partner of Zhuang, was detained in Xiamen and later confessed to the murders, police said.
Li said he failed to secure a loan from Zhuang while they negotiated a business deal on July 16. He murdered Zhuang and his driver the next day and later sent the ransom message to disguise the case as a kidnapping.
Police said a further investigation was underway.
