Hong Kong overtook Japan as having the longest living women in the world in 2011, according to the Census & Statistics Department of the Hong Kong SAR government.

The Census & Statistics Department said on July 26 that the average life expectancy in Hong Kong women in 2011 reached 86.7, claiming the title of world's longest-living women. Japanese women previously held the record since 1985.

Hong Kong men had an average expectancy of 80.5, securing them title for the second year in a row.

Doctors say that Hong Kong women's longevity is down to healthy diet and advanced and affordable medical services in the city.

The Census & Statistics Department also revealed that the gender imbalance in Hong Kong deteriorated. The ratio of women to men in Hong Kong was 1,000 to 876 last year, compared to 1,000 to 912 in 2006.

The department said that about 55.4% of women and 60.6% of men were married, compared with 57.5% and 61.6% in 2001.

The median monthly income of women and men, excluding foreign domestic helpers, was $11,000 and $13,000 HK dollars respectively.
