Six miners were killed and six others injured in a coal mine accident in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Tuesday, according to the region's mine safety supervisory agency.

It is not immediately known what had happened underground when the accident took place at around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday at Hongxing Coal Mine in Changji City.

Rescuers have discovered six bodies, and six injured miners have been rushed to hospital for treatment, said an official with Xinjiang's bureau of coal mine safety supervision.

The privately-owned mine with an annual production capacity of 90,000 tonnes is about 70 km away from the city of Changji.
