A skyscraper under construction in Suzhou, a city located to the west of Shanghai, has received widespread online ridicule for questionable design, Nanjing Morning reported.

The Gate of the Orient vs. CCTV tower "Big Pants."

Located beside Jinji Lake, the Gate of the Orient skyscraper suspiciously resembles a pair of pants, and some bloggers are beginning to refer to the structure to a "pair of hip-huggers," a reference to pair of tightly-fitted jeans.

A netizen from Suzhou uploaded photos of the skyscraper to his microblog on Aug. 27, and was quickly forward more than 4,400 times despite the bloggers limited audience.

More bloggers began to upload additional picture of the Gate, and compared the building to a pair of British plaid overalls.

The blogosphere made many references to the CCTV tower in Beijing, and that the new structure in Suzhou would make a perfect counterpart for the awkwardly designed building.

Despite the widespread online criticism, the Gate has received a high level of praise for its distinctive architectural style within the industry. A real estate developer in Nanjing said that people's attitudes toward the building will change after the project is completed.
