The organizers of a university beauty contest in central China's Hubei Province have sparked controversy with their choice of criteria, as they are planning to use the competitors' breast sizes to help determine who will walk away with the crown.

A list of 50 criteria released by the contest's organizing committee requires contestants to have "firm" breasts, as well as a horizontal distance of 20 cm or greater between their nipples.

The event is being organized by the China Campus Model Network, a website run by a small company based in Wuhan, the provincial capital. Registration for the event began on Sept. 5 and will close on Oct. 1.

Although only five contestants have appeared on the event's website so far, the event has triggered controversy online.

Talk show host and national political advisor Yang Lan said the criteria are degrading to women.

"It's so 'out' to measure women by such stiff criteria," she wrote on Sina Weibo, a popular microblogging site.

"These beauties are human beings, not puppets," wrote netizen "nongyizhiduoshao" on Sina Weibo.

Others have stated that the purpose of releasing the criteria was merely to garner publicity for the event.

"The organizers of beauty contests are just trying to shock the public. Relevant authorities really need to do something to stop it," said commentator Zhao Yansheng.
