Local university unveils its 'baby elephant' robot

University lab findings and cutting-edge technologies are widely applied in our daily life, experts said yesterday at the ongoing China International Industry Fair in Shanghai.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University has developed a "baby elephant" robot that can carry equipment weighing up to 100 kilograms into disaster sites that rescue teams can't access.
The university said China has entered the first-tier countries in terms of developing four-legged robots.
Donghua University has developed a high-tech textile that is fire, heat and static resistant. It has been widely used as a decorative material in cars and can also be made into fire-proof gloves, aprons and clothes. In the past, it was imported from Japan and Europe.
Tongji University has collaborated with a firm to develop an electric concept car equipped with a 3G network and hands-free phone. The single-seat vehicle is so small it fits in a lift.
It costs between 40,000 yuan (US$6,400) and 50,000 yuan although the price would drop if it was mass produced, the university said.
University lab findings are favored at the fair, held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Twenty-two universities signed cooperation contracts worth 853 million yuan with companies at last year's fair.
