Prices for the bulk purchases of fruits and vegetables have now plummeted to a freezing point, with Chinese cabbage going for 0.5 yuan, carrots for 1.2 yuan and ginger for 0.6 yuan per kilogram. These figures lag far behind those of the previous years, when Chinese cabbage stood at 1.2 to 1.4 yuan per kilogram.
"In addition to the low purchasing prices, the market has been sluggish all of this year. Individual cabbage and carrot vendors have witnessed significant reductions in their earnings this year," a farmer surnamed Cheng told Tech-food.com.
According to farmer Sun Maolin, the stagnation of the fruits and vegetables market is mainly attributed to the oversupply of this harvesting season.
"Different from the cabbages and carrots, vegetables like rapes, bean sprouts and cilantros, are now much more profitable due to their short growing periods and fast returns," Sun said.
Local governments should build more information facilities for farmers to get easy access to markets, online news portal Cjn.cn commented.
Some netizens are also assisting farmers by expanding the market via their online connections.
