E-mail Xinhua, December 20, 2012More than 300 guests attended a flag raising ceremony in Macao Thursday morning, opening a series of activities and events to mark the 13th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
Chui Sai On, the Chief Executive of Macao SAR, delivered a speech at a reception at the Macao Tower after the flag-raising ceremony.
Chui said the great principle of "One country, two systems" continues to be realized and to develop progressively over the past year, with the full support of the central government, the bulwark of the Basic Law and the efforts of the whole Macao community.
Macao's economy is maintaining steady growth with strong fiscal reserves and a high employment rate, according to Chui.
He also said that the government would reinforce the establishment and improvement of the long-term mechanism of effective administration in social security, medical services and healthcare, education and housing.
"We will make progress in the infrastructural development in the aforementioned areas and provide hardware support, promote inter-departmental cooperation, and integrate multifaceted support to give full play to the function of the long-term mechanism of effective administration," said Chui.
Besides, the "Parade through Macao, Latin City" was organized for the second consecutive year in the afternoon as part of other cultural celebrations.
Artists and groups from all over the world, accompanied by numerous local talents, set out on their performing journey from the city's iconic Ruins of St. Paul's and across the city.
The Macao Sport Development Board also staged a concert by Hong Kong pop star Eason Chan Yik-shun at Macao Stadium to bring fun and entertainment to the public.
In the evening, the Macao Government Tourist Office presented a fireworks display off Macao Tower. The Macao Post also issued commemorative covers.
