An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted the sea area off Taiwan's southeastern coast at 11:24 a.m. Saturday, the island's meteorological authorities said.

The epicenter is monitored at 22.04 degrees north latitude and 121.48 degrees east longitude, 86.5 km southeast of Taitung County, with a depth of 16.3 km.

There has been no reports on property losses or casualties.
