Huang Ming, vice minister of public security, made the remarks during a televised conference on traffic management for the Spring Festival travel rush, which starts on Jan. 26.

The Spring Festival, China's most important holiday for family reunions, falls on Feb. 10 this year.

The number of road passengers is expected to increase by 9 percent during the travel period in comparison to previous years.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese, mainly migrant workers and college students, travel home during the period to visit their families.

A surge of vehicles on highways due to the exemption of road tolls for small passenger cars and freezing weather will also pose challenges to transportation and railway authorities.
