China's Ministry of Commerce and the National Tourism Administration held a conference on Jan. 28 to discuss how to reduce food waste.

At the conference, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming stressed that restaurants and the foodservice industry should strive to develop online ordering, semi-finished food products and more take-out and fast food services. He emphasized the industry should limit minimum consumption and private dining room fees. He also said it should speed up promoting breakfast projects, community fast food service and business group meal service. He also mentioned accelerating the development of uniform distribution among fast food chain businesses.

The minister urged the industry to put up slogans to encourage consumers to economize on food ordering and fight against waste. He said menus should show the weight of materials used in a dish. For set meals, menus should show the suitable number of people intended for each set. Chen also said waiters and waitresses could remind customers to take home their leftovers.
