Two foreign cargo ships collided off the coast of Shanghai on Tuesday, resulting in an oil leak that has spread across 0.3 square kilometers of water, according to a statement released Friday by the State Oceanic Administration (SOA).

The collision between a British cargo ship and a Panamanian one occurred early Tuesday morning, causing the British vessel to leak oil, the statement said.

According to the statement, local maritime authorities in Shanghai are organizing forces to clean up the oil slick, while the SOA East China Sea Branch has vowed to continue monitoring the leakage and publicize the results in a timely manner.
