E-mail Xinhua, April 16, 2013Chinese maritime authorities on Tuesday added the country's largest and most advanced patrol vessel to their fleet in a move to better protect the country's maritime rights and interests.
Haixun 01 is the first Chinese vessel to incorporate marine inspection and rescue functions. It will carry out missions regarding maritime inspection, safety monitoring, rescue, and oil spill detection and handling, said Xu Guoyi, head of the Shanghai Maritime Bureau, which will manage the ship.
The 5,418-tonnage Haixun 01 is 128.6 meters in length, 16 meters in width and can sail for 10,000 nautical miles (18,520 km) without refueling.
Xu said the vessel will conduct patrols and be prepared to deal with emergencies on a daily basis in the East China Sea, South China Sea and Yellow Sea.
The operation of Haixun 01 will help improve the standard of China's maritime administration equipment and maintain China's economic safety at sea, according to Xu.
As long as the nation has a growing demand for safeguarding maritime sovereignty and interests, it will further develop series of more advanced vessels with larger scales and greater open water capability, the maritime bureau chief added.
