A man who allegedly made a false bomb threat regarding a flight between the southwestern city of Kunming and Beijing on Tuesday has been detained, police said.

Police authorities in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, received a phone call on Tuesday afternoon saying there was a time bomb on an airplane of China Eastern Airlines bound for Beijing.

Local police then immediately carried out a contingency plan for major emergencies and evacuated the plane. A following check-up found no bomb onboard, the provincial public security bureau said in a statement.

The man behind the bomb hoax was detained Tuesday night in Kunming, it said. Further investigation into the hoax is under way.

Earlier on May 15, five flights bound for Shenzhen and operated by China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines were targeted by bomb hoaxes.

On May 17, all flights at the Jiangbei International Airport in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality were disrupted for over one hour following a false bomb threat.
