Nearly 86% of students at China's Sun Yat-sen University have masturbated at some point in their lives, according to a recent study by the campus' Youth magazine.

The 190-person survey of student attitudes towards sex included 103 male students and 87 female students. Of those who answered that they had ever masturbated, 55 percent said they had done so within the past three days.

Differences in male and female responses were striking: while 96 percent of the male students said they had, at some point, masturbated, only 70 percent of female respondents said they had.

Of male students who do masturbate, 56 percent do so one to three times per week. Only 15 percent of female students said they masturbated as often. Forty percent of the female respondents who masturbate said they do so "a few times in a year."

When asked if they had someone they fantasized about, 87 percent of men said that they did, while 68 percent of female respondents answered "yes" to the same question.

Overall, 59 percent of respondents said that they think masturbation is "normal" and see nothing wrong with it. Just 9 percent of those surveyed said they had a negative view of masturbation, while 28 percent said that they believed masturbation has health benefits.
