Four divers in Xiangtan city in central China's Hunan Province have capitalized on their professional skills to escape the scorching summer heat: playing mahjong at the bottom of a swimming pool.

The four initially used gestures to communicate and now use flash cards to express their moves. They play rock, paper, scissors in place of dice.

The aluminum alloy table is weighed down by lead and the mahjong pieces, made of polyurethane, do not float in the water.

The temperature at 5.5 meters underwater is only 29 degrees Celsius and the apparent temperature felt by the body can be as low as 24 degrees, according to Zhang Pin, a swimming coach.

Even if one is armed with an oxygen tank, as the divers are, the underwater mahjong game is only fit for licensed divers, cautions Zhang.
