A forestry official in the eastern city of Nanchang has been detained on suspicion of causing the death of four people in a drunk driving accident, the city government said yesterday.

Xu Jianping is a deputy director with the city's forestry bureau. His ID card and car license were found in the SUV, the Legal Evening News reported, adding that he was seen receiving treatment in an ambulance after the accident.

A witness, surnamed Deng, said the driver reeked of alcohol and was the only one in the car. "He did not seem to be sober. He claimed he compensated the people who got hit," Deng was quoted as saying.

Xu reportedly has admitted to being drunk at the time. The SUV crashed into four people who were standing near a grapefruit stall and a car parked on the roadside. Four people died at the scene. The front of the vehicle was severely damaged.
