Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun on Monday called for building a safer China and unwaveringly safeguarding the state.

Guo, also a state councilor, made the remarks at a nationwide symposium held in the port city of Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province.

He urged police departments to focus on major social security issues of concern to the public and always maintain high pressure on illegal activities and crime so as to maintain social stability and improve the public's sense of security.

Guo also called on the police to normalize law enforcement and improve the police's credibility in people's minds.

The symposium was attended by the provincial heads of public security bureaus.
