5 dead, 38 injured after car crash at Tian'anmen

Five were confirmed dead, 38 injured after a jeep crashed into the crowd and caught fire in front of the Tian'anmen Rostrum at around 12:05 PM on Monday.

A driver and two passengers died at the scene. Two tourists, a Philippine woman and a man from south China's Guangdong Province, died in hospital.

Among the 38 injured, three are from the Philippines, one is from Japan.

The jeep, which turned right from Nanchizi Street into Chang’an Avenue, travelled west before hitting tourists and police officers patrolling the area, according to Beijing police authorities and media reports.

Police officers on spot immediately provided first aid to the injured before they were hospitalized.

The jeep fire was put out in a timely manner.

Police are currently investigating the incident.
