The owners of more than 103,000 accounts on Sina Weibo, one of the China's most popular micro-blogging sites, have been given punishments for various violations after a company inspection, People's Daily reported on Wednesday.

Among the offending accounts, 1,030 were found to be publishing false information, 75,267 were verbally insulting people and 14,357 were harassing others, the newspaper quoted a Sina report as saying.

The move was made after Sina intensified its fight against false online rumors in the past several months.

A total of 3,773 accounts were shut down for posting pornographic content. Other offenders had their accounts suspended.

Personal abuse and abuse of privacy are the top two types of complaint made by individuals to Sina, it added.
