A recent research has found that 21.8 percent of the Chinese super rich are not from the Chinese mainland.

Lyu Peng, an assistant research fellow from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences analyzed 211 Chinese super rich or "the visibly richest Chinese private entrepreneurs," as he narrowed down the group to those who were on the Hurun and Forbes rich lists from 2003 to 2012.

The research found that, after ruling out those who were not born on the Chinese mainland, there were still 46 people who were not registered on the Chinese mainland, accounting for 21.8 percent of the super rich. This figure is much lower than other separate studies on the super rich emigration, according to the research.

While the wealthiest may choose either to show off or disguise their foreign identities, most of them benefit from not being Chinese. A number of them went abroad in the 1970s or 1980s, and set up their businesses with the support of their foreign network. Many took advantage of China's favorable policies for foreign businesses, or China's double-track pricing system in the 1980s, which set different prices for the same goods and easily led to speculation.

This helped lay the foundation for their business ventures and distinguishes them from their counterparts in former socialist countries such as Russia, Poland and Hungary, claimed the research.
