A Traffic police officer in southwest China has been dismissed for demanding 200 yuan (US$32) to return a driver's license.

The police assistant, surnamed Dong, has broken regulations and damaged the reputation of local police, the police authority with the Huangyuan County in Xining, Qinghai Province, said.

Dong confiscated the driving license of a Tibetan driver in April after his vehicle was involved in a minor accident.

The driver compensated 4,000 yuan (US$640) to the owner of the car on the scene, but Dong kept the license as he suspected it was forged, according to the police

Dong asked the driver for 200 yuan and on receiving it returned the license on June 5.

This transaction was recorded on a hidden camera by Xining Television Station.
