A man, who was found guilty of chopping the hand of a 10-year-old boy and boiling it, was yesterday sentenced to 11 years in prison in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The ghastly incident occurred at a budget hotel in Tiexi District on October 22, according to Liaoshen Evening News.

Wang Xinyu, a 31-year-old unemployed man, had a tiff with his girlfriend over the phone and vented his anger on her son who was staying with him, prosecutors said.

Wang hit the boy on the head and then cut off his right hand with a knife. He then dumped the severed hand into boiling water in a kettle. But he recovered his composure soon and rushed the boy to the hospital.

But it was too late. Doctors could not reattach the hand as it was in boiling water for too long.

Wang later surrendered to the police.

Wang apologized and admitted to committing the crime at the Shenyang Intermediate People's Court. His lawyer argued Wang acted "out of impulse" and asked for a lenient sentence.

The court, while handing down the verdict yesterday, said Wang caused severe injuries to the boy because of his violent behavior. But because he was willing to compensate for his act and had been forgiven by the boy's family, the court gave him a lighter sentence.
