Shaoxing in east China's Zhejiang province has installed automatic glass breaking equipment on some of its buses to ensure emergency escape, Chinanews.com reported.

The move came in response to the more frequent bus explosion incidents across the country, company official Ma Pingping said.

Earlier this month, more than 30 people were injured when a man set a bus on fire in the nearby city of Hangzhou, the provincial capital.

With the new equipment, the bus driver can press the button once there is an emergency, and the window glass will fracture into granulated pieces. Passengers don't need to break the windows with emergency hammers.

The equipment costs about two to four thousand yuan for each bus, said Feng Xiaokang, assistant to the general manager.
