However, students from the No.5 primary school in Handan City, Hebei Province, took their exams whilst squatting on the floor of an outdoor playground, exposing themselves to the thick smog.

A teacher in the school said that there were not enough classrooms for all the students to sit indoors, so a batch of them had to take their midterm exams squatting on the floor of the playground outside.

The photos of this incident has since been posted online.

Hebei has been under an orange alert for smog, just below the most severe red alert.
