Hong Kong's constitutional development is a big step forward for its democratic progress and Taiwan should not point fingers at the central government's decisions, a mainland spokeswoman said yesterday.
The recent acts in Hong Kong have disrupted the city's social order, economic development and rule of law, and are raising resentment from more and more Hong Kong people, Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference.
Fan was responding to comments of support for the Occupy Central movement and criticism of the mainland's political system by some people in Taiwan.
"The Taiwan compatriots' choice on social system and lifestyle is respected and we hope Taiwan will respect the choice of the 1.3 billion people of the mainland," Fan said.
The peaceful development of mainland-Taiwan relations has been hard-earned and should be cherished, Fan said.
