Media reports said the attack happened Saturday afternoon at Pingdingshan Hebin Park, which has a zoo inside. The boy, Zhang Letian, wriggled through a broken fence and managed to push his arm through the bear's cage to feed it.

However, the bear bit him in the arm, he fought the bear for a dozen minutes before managing to escape.

Zhang was sent to the Pingdingshan Number 152 Hospital immediately. The doctor who treated the boy said he lost his entire right arm, which had to be amputated.

Zhang's parents were unsatisfied on the shabby guard facilities of the zoo. They also complained that the zoo authorities never said a word on this accident, or visited the injured boy. Though they did send 5,000 yuan to the hospital for treatment.
