HK supercar drivers held over Shenzhen road race |
Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini and Nissan GT-R cars are reported to have reached speeds of 251 kilometers per hour on the highway which has a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour.
Motorists overtaken by the illegal racers reported being terrified as the supercars weaved between lanes.
The men are said to have told police that the roads in Hong Kong are too narrow for racing, so they crossed over to Guangdong Province instead, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.
Highway cameras recorded them racing on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Highway around noon on November 6 and the following morning.
The 89-kilometer highway links Guangdong's capital Guangzhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen.
The men, who are aged between 36 and 62, are suspected of dangerous driving. They face detention and fines if found guilty.
The group had been issued with temporary certificates which allowed them to drive to Shenzhen and stay there for a week, it was reported.
Driving toward Guangzhou, they recklessly chased each other and arbitrarily changed lanes, police said.
A motorist surnamed Wang, who was driving a mini van at 100 kilometer per hour, told the paper that his vehicle shook when the pack of sports cars zoomed past.
"I thought they were doing about 300 kilometers per hour as they chased each other," he said,
"My sight is very good but they passed so quickly that I couldn't see their plate numbers.
"I was terrified because I thought if one hit me I would certainly die."
Assisted by Shenzhen Customs, police had traced and held 13 people and 12 cars by yesterday.
