China launched a special campaign this year to seek overseas for fugitives who committed economic crimes, and 428 of these criminals have been brought back to China to date. Some of them are being brought to justice with the help of Interpol.

Interpol issues a red notice, which is similar to an international arrest warrant, to help Interpol member countries extradite criminals.

There are a total of 503 Chinese, 475 of whom are from the Chinese mainland, on red notices from Interpol.

Five provinces in eastern China – Zhejiang, Liaoning, Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangsu – have the highest numbers of wanted persons, accounting for more than half of the total number.

Many of the wanted persons are former government officials or bosses of state-owned enterprises, although family members of some corrupt officials are also on the list.

One prominent fugitive is Cheng Muyang, the son of former governor and Chairman of the Hebei Province People's Congress Cheng Weigao. Cheng Muyang fled to Canada in 2000 and was listed as wanted in 2013 for helping transfer loot and graft of state properties, attesting to the increasingly serious efforts to crack down on corruption in the country.
