The number of tourists visiting Shanghai over the weeklong Spring Festival holiday rose 4.8 percent year on year to 3.8 million, the city’s tourism authority said yesterday.

Tourist revenue in the period gained 4.9 percent from last year to 3.75 billion yuan (US$599.6 million), the Shanghai Tourism Administration said.

Admissions at the 120 tourist attractions monitored by the administration rose 6 percent from last year to more than 3.5 million, while the city’s major parks welcomed 3.7 million visitors, it said.

Shanghai Wildlife Park saw some of the best year-on-year growth, with visitors up 39 percent at 133,000. At Century Park, the number of people passing through the gates gained 5 percent to 76,000, while the Happy Valley theme park reported a growth of 12.6 percent to 53,300 visitors.

The China Art Palace welcomed 97,700 visitors over the holiday, while the Moon Boat — formerly the Saudi pavilion at the 2010 World Expo — saw 17,200, the administration said, without providing comparative figures.

At the city’s two airports, the number of passenger departures over the seven-day holiday rose 8 percent to 874,200, while the number of arrivals gained 13 percent to 884,700.

On the trains, 1.14 million people left Shanghai during the February 18 to 23 period, while 971,000 arrived.
