Eight-year-old Liu Zixi realized his dream of becoming a police officer on Monday after his story made the local news.

Liu suffers from leukemia and has been receiving treatment at a hospital in Changchun, Jilin Province. He has undergone chemotherapy nine times.

After reading about his story, local authorities tailored a uniform for the boy and dubbed him “honorary policeman” during a ceremony. He was also assigned an exclusive police ID number and was given the duty of “protecting the hospital.”

When asked why he wanted to be a policeman, he said, “I want to defend justice,” Chinanews.com reported on Monday.

The story of Liu went viral in China’s online community overnight. One Weibo user, @Fionaaaaaaasong said: “It’s so nice to see that we have these kinds of heartwarming stories in our country.”

Another user, @Changjing, like most people online, wished the boy “a healthy future and hopes more dreams can come true,” and expressed her gratitude to the police.
