The SLCU launched a series of combat training programs for the frontier guards including tactical maneuvers on how to conduct searches in urban areas.

The SLCU is part of the People's Armed Police of China, and is in-charge of counter-terrorism efforts, riot control, resolving cases of hijacking and bomb disposal.

This special operations unit undertook several aspects of the security operations during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
