A man from Beizhen in northeast China’s Liaoning Province was recently sentenced to one year’s imprisonment for forcedly stuffing his girlfriend inside a suitcase hidden in the back seat of a hired car, www.hsw.cn reported on Wednesday.

The bizarre event happened in June last year. The man, surnamed Wang, came from his hometown to Xi’an, the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, to meet his girlfriend, a woman surnamed Mu.

The two met in a local hotel the next morning. Wang tried to persuade Mu to return home and marry him. When they couldn’t reach an agreement on betrothal and wedding gifts, the conversation ultimately turned into a heated quarrel.

Mu adamantly refused to come with Wang. Wang tied Mu up with a rope which he had prepared in advance and stuffed her inside a big suitcase. He also used a towel to gag Mu and keep her from crying out.

Wang then called the special car service which he had booked in advance at a cost of 5,000 yuan and placed the suitcase in the back seat of the car when it arrived. The driver didn’t find anything abnormal about the situation until they drove onto the expressway.

“The man had asked me to pick up someone on our journey. However, as soon as we got onto the expressway, he said the person he asked me to pick up was already in the suitcase in the back of the car,” the driver said afterwards.

The driver immediately stopped the car and asked Wang to open the suitcase, inside which Mu was hidden. Afraid to be implicated in the case, the driver asked Wang to release Mu and leave after paying the remaining fee for the car service.

“The man didn’t have enough money and the woman even helped him pay the remaining rental fee,” said the driver, adding, “The man asked me to take him to continue his journey home, but I refused.”

Mu immediately called the police as soon as she was released. On June 17, Wang was arrested in his hometown of Beizhen. He gave police a full confession.

The story of Wang and Mu began back in March 2012 when the latter divorced her husband in Xi’an and went to northeast China to run a small business. There, she met Wang and fell in love, but the affair didn’t run smoothly. Their families were too far apart and had many rows over their betrothal and wedding gifts. Wang and Mu had traveled back and forth between Beizhen and Xi’an over and over again.

The Xicheng District People's Court of Xi'an Municipality recently had a public hearing on the case. Wang was accused of illegal detention of another person and sentenced to one year's imprisonment.
