Nokia CEO receives Marco Polo Award

The Chinese government awarded Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri with the Marco Polo Award in Beijing on Thursday. The award honors individuals or enterprises who help China's international exchange of personnel.

Zhang Jianguo, director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and vice chairman and general secretary of the China Association for the International Exchange of Personnel, presented Suri with the plaque and award for the outstanding contributions of Suri and the multinational communications and information technology corporation he heads to the innovation of China's network communications and for their efforts to promote international exchange of personnel in China.

Rajeev Suri has been the CEO of Nokia Solutions and Networks since 2009 and has held various positions in Nokia since 1995. Suri became the CEO of Nokia when the sale of Nokia's phone division to Microsoft Mobile was completed. Nokia still maintains subsidiaries Nokia Networks, HERE and Nokia Technologies.

"This award is a great honor for me and represents years of commitment from thousands of Nokia employees, " Suri said in his speech.

Suri is also a member of the Global CEO Council of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

"As Marco Polo once came and went through the Silk Road, China now also proposed the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road initiatives, which will build a community of common interests in Europe and Asia to promote mutual benefit and development and world peace," said Liu Yanguo, vice director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and vice general secretary of the China Association for the International Exchange of Personnel, in his speech at the award ceremony.

The Marco Polo Award, named after the Venetian traveler who first promoted friendship and trade between China and the West, is a top honor awarded to foreign business leaders and social activists who contribute to China's international cooperation and personnel exchanges.

The award ceremony was organized by the China Association for the International Exchange of Personnel, the U.S.-China Foundation for International Exchanges and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. Former recipients of the award include former United States President George H. W. Bush.
