A health official from an eastern Chinese city has been detained in Beijing over prostitution.

The People's Daily reports on Tuesday that Yang Jun, head of Yangzhou's health and family planning department, was detained in the Chinese capital, where he attended a training program.

Yang has been removed from the Communist Party of China and from public office.

Beijing police announced last weekend that they had busted 68 prostitution rings and arrested some 600 suspects since April this year. Six entertainment venues have also been temporarily shut down over prostitution and gambling.
