A vice public security minister has called for police forces in and around the capital city to enhance security to guarantee "the absolute safety" of a military parade in September and the Athletics World Championships in late August.

At a security work conference attended by senior police officers from Beijing and 13 other provincial regions on Tuesday, vice minister of public security Huang Ming said police forces must maintain local social stability. "The bottom line is, anti-terrorism work must be implemented well to ensure terrorist plots are foiled before they can be carried out."

He also urged the police to enhance their inspection of safety hazards such as fire and traffic accidents and strengthen patrol measures at key areas.

Huang added that checkpoints at highways, railroads and airports, especially those linking with Beijing, should also heighten security checks.

China has scheduled a series of events to mark the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War Against Japanese Aggression, culmination in a military parade on Sept. 3 in Beijing.
