Mourning on the seventh day of Tianjin blasts
Today is the seventh day after the catastrophic explosions in Tianjin Port on Aug. 12. According to Chinese traditional custom, the country is mourning the 114 victims, including 39 firefighters and five policemen who lost their lives in the explosions. Many TV stations, including CCTV and Tianjin Satellite TV, delayed their regularly scheduled programms to offer their condolences to those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Residents reject compensation for blasts
Residents neighboring the site of the Tianjin explosions have rejected the local government's intent to issue each of them 6,000 yuan as compensation, Caijing.com.cn reported. According to the report, the residents whose residences were damaged by the explosions instead on pressing the government to repurchase their flats.
Container company suspected of violating laws
According to an anonymous employer from the Tianjin Ruihai International Logistic Port, the company did not stop its hazardous chemical operations after legal validity expired on October 16th, 2014, China News Service reported. The company started dangerous chemicals business in April of 2014, winning the approval of the environmental department. The department had an assessment which included a poll of 128 residents of the Tianjin Binhai New Area who did not veto the construction of the company. However, according to China News Service, some residents said they had neither known the poll had ever been taken or realized that hazardous chemicals of this kind were anywhere near their homes.
Forecasted rain may complicate rescue
A thunderstorm has been forecast today in Tianjin. Experts are worried that it may complicate the rescue efforts at the explosions site, as the rainfall may combine with various unexploded chemicals causing new explosions and contamination.
Recap of casualties of Tianjin blasts
A total of 114 people died in the explosions at the Ruihai International Logistics Company, with the identities of 83 people confirmed. Among the casualties, 56 people were firefighters or policemen. Meanwhile, there are still 31 people yet to be identification. There is an additional group of 57 people, composed of six public security firefighters, 46 local firefighters and 5 policemen, who remain missing in the rescue area.
