A total of 1,312 dengue cases, 95.85 percent less than the same period last year, have been reported in 18 cities across south China's Guangdong Province so far this year, local health authorities said Friday.

There have been no deaths reported yet, and 99 people caught dengue outside of the province. Chaozhou City has seen the highest number of cases, at 1,162, said the province's health and family planning commission.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that mainly affects people in tropical and subtropical regions, causing fever, nausea, as well as muscle and joint aches.

Guangdong reported the majority of China's 46,000 dengue cases last year, including more than 35,000 in the provincial capital Guangzhou.
