At least 17 people were killed in a restaurant explosion in Wuhu City, East China's Anhui Province on Saturday at noon.

The explosion occurred at 11:57 AM in a small private restaurant on Yangjiaxiang Street in the city's Jinghu (Mirror Lake) District. The explosion was caused by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) leakage and flames instantly engulfed the restaurant.

The restaurant owner's wife told the press that she was preparing raw materials when she began to smell the gas. She rushed to close the valve, but was unable to shut it properly. The explosion occurred when she was sending for her husband and workers to help.

Rescuers and local leaders responded to the scene. Further investigations are under way.
