A 20-year-old young recruit in north China's Shanxi Province faces heavy penalties for refusing to participate in routine training after he volunteered to join the army.

Li Yu, born in June, 1995, volunteered to join the military in September this year from his hometown Shouyang County in Shanxi Province. However, he then felt military life too hard and refused to participate in routine training.

The local armed forces department and his family members went to his camp, trying to talk Li out of his negative feelings but he threatened to stage a hunger strike, among other extreme acts. His behavior created a bad influence in his barrack and led to his expulsion.

The local government fined him 114,692 yuan (US$17,983), twice the compensation normally paid for the family with a member undertaking voluntary military service, and blacklisted him from any sort of government job. In addition, he was banned from going abroad and from higher education opportunities for two years, and from starting his own business, obtaining bank loans and getting a local job in any sector for three years.

He is also expelled from the Communist Youth League and the above penalties will be made public throughout the country.
