Rescuers are searching for a missing coal miner after a fire in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province on Friday night that killed 21 other workers.

Hao Fukun, president of Heilongjiang Longmei Group, the mine's owner, said the missing miner's location has already been confirmed.

"Currently, 21 have died, one is still missing. We have a confirmed location for the missing person. We're trying our best to locate him."

The mine is in the city of Jixi, which is located near China's border with both Russia and North Korea.

38 men were working underground when the fire broke out on Friday night.

16 of them managed to make it out.

One of the miners who escaped, Liu Niande, recalled what was happening at that time.

"One co-worker came over and said there is a lot of smoke inside, and would not let us in. So I led my co-workers to the cart at section two, and we got out."

Liu added that the group he was working with was located above the site of the fire.
