Saliva tests for the AIDS virus are now offered on drug store shelves in China's southwestern Yunnan Province, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Yunnan.

A total of 2,000 AIDS testing reagents hit shelves at 40 drugstores in six cities and prefectures in Yunnan, with a price of 100 yuan each (about 16 U.S. dollars).

People are able to test whether they are infected with the AIDS virus in 20 minutes by using samples of saliva.

"The test has made self-diagnosis of AIDS virus possible," said Lu Lin, director of Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Yunnan," the method is convenient and accurate, protecting people's privacy at the same time."

As of September 2015, there were 72,439 HIV and AIDS patients diagnosed in Yunnan.
