A Chinese passenger on an international-bound flight was arrested for creating a scene and assaulting police officers at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

The unruly Chinese passenger, who was forcibly evicted from a United Airlines flight bound for New York at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Sunday, has been fired from his job.

The passenger, Lu Yong, was a guest professor at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

The university issued a statement on its Weibo account today and confirmed he was teaching at the university as a guest professor since August. Lu was also the director of Internet Finance Research Center at the university.

Lu is also an associate professor at the Pennsylvania State University in the United States.

Southwestern University said it values virtues and ethical conduct of its teachers and does not tolerate unlawful behavior.

It therefore chose to terminate its relationship with Lu.

On Sunday, after boarding Flight UA087 for New York, Lu insisted on a seat upgrade and then went and occupied a seat assigned to another passenger. As Lu refused to go back to his seat or leave the aircraft, the captain notified the airport police.

Three police officers then tried to reason with him and then forcibly removed him from the aircraft. Some of the officers were reportedly hurt.

Pictures and videos of the incident went viral on the Internet.

Lu has been detained and faces charges of assaulting police officers and deliberately obstructing public activity.
