A new water pipeline for Macao is scheduled to start construction next January and be in use in June 2017. The 15-km pipeline will cost 527 million yuan (82.2 million USD).

The construction project consists of three parts, which cover a pipeline linking a water pump station in Guangchang with Guadingjiao, an enlarged water pump station in Hongwan and a pipeline connecting the pump station to Cotai in Macao.

The aim of the project is to optimize the pipeline layout for Macao. The present three pipelines have only limited transmission capacity so the fresh water supply is unable to meet local demand, which is now hampering local economic development.

Water quality monitoring is also highlighted in the project. Water in the pump stations will be inspected to verify if the level of various chemical traces is within the normal range. All information will be shared by Macao and the water supplier.
