China has the second-largest number of think tanks in the world, second only to the United States, according to a report.

The 2015 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, released by The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, covers 6,846 think tanks registered around the world.

Of that number, 435 are Chinese, while 1,835 are from the United States. Meanwhile, Britain has 288 and India 280, ranking third and fourth respectively.

Nine Chinese institutes emerged in the Top 175 Think Tanks globally, led by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Institute of International Studies, and the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations.

Four organizations were included in the world's top 100 most influential, and a total of 18 institutes appeared in the top 60 in Asia.

The report added that China's think tanks have grown rapidly in the past year while some have received international attention. Six private think tanks also made the world top 50 list.
