Shanghai has prolonged registration procedures for couples wishing to file for divorce with the launch of new registration regulations last month.
According to the new rule, separate talks with both partners are required before their divorce takes effect.
Applicants filing for divorce must now complete a questionnaire regarding their agreement on child raising and property settlement, said Sun Xiaohong, deputy director of the marriage management department of the civil affairs bureau in the municipality.
"The questionings will reflect the true intentions of the couple, who will have the opportunity to reconfirm and rearrange their divorce protocols before the files are ratified," Sun said.
In previous year, some couples demanded to modify their protocols after they had been legally divorced. The questionings will help reduce problems in cases where couples wish to change something in their agreement, Sun said.
With separate questioning, community volunteers and lawyers are able to intervene when couples seem to be making excessively fast decisions.
