Citing the example of the existing greenway circulating Fenghuangshan Mountain, the article said that minor construction work could extend the length of the greenway to 50 kilometers (31 miles) and make it a new landmark for Zhuhai. In addition, the improved greenway would improve the city's image, boost its tourism industry, and ease the city's heavy traffic flow.
In response, the Zhuhai Urban Council and Forestry Bureau said that construction work for circular greenways in Fenghuangshan Mountain, Qi'ao Island, and Hengqin Island is under way. Currently, construction work has almost been completed on Fenghuangshan Mountain and Qi'ao Island, while the Hengqin project is further behind. Up till now, the total length of greenways in Zhuhai has reached 896 kilometers (556 miles), and another 70 kilometers (43 miles) will be built by the end of the year.
In spite of the convenience and economic benefits brought by the greenways, there are still some problems to be addressed, including a shortage of separate lanes and multifunctional amenities along the greenways. In addition, relevant departments are trying to find solutions to integrate the greenway network with the city's public transportation system and further exploit the greenways' economic potential. To tackle these problems, experts suggest scientifically devising development plans and encouraging private capital to join in the construction of greenways.
