A woman in her seventies from Hubei Province was recently stunned by a lightning strike that spilt through her ceiling and destroyed her TV's electrical circuits.

A local villager in Hebei Province said lightning strikes are common in the village during the rainy season. [File photo]

Trembling after the attack, the old woman kept murmuring to her son and daughter-in-law: There was a big fire.

After the incident, her son found a light switch blown out of the wall and a lamp exploded into pieces. The strike caused much worse damages on the second floor.

They weren't the only family afflicted by lightning strikes in the village. More than 20 households reported damage to fluorescent lights and TV sets; luckily, no injuries were reported.

A local villager said lightning strikes are common in the village during the rainy season. "We buy TV sets every year after the old ones are destroyed," a villager said sarcastically.

A possible reason for the village's frequent thunder strikes may be a result of the geographic conditions.

Officials from the lightning-prevention center assured the villagers that the installation of lightning-proof equipment can protect them from being struck. They also advised residents in the villages to switch off the electricity during thunderstorms.
